Roadwork: Are we wasting our time?

10/31/2017

Roadwork. It’s boring, gruelling, and dreadful. Roadwork is a mandatory part of every boxer and MMA fighter’s training regimen—or is it? You’ve been looking for a way out of waking up at 6 AM to get your ‘Rocky’ on, and we may have found the answer to your prayers.

There is empirical evidence (AKA real, university-level research) that supports sport-specific interval training over long distance roadwork. This means those hard three minute rounds on the bag are much more beneficial than your three miles on the streets. In summary, the studies have found that:

1) Fighters need to focus on increasing their VO2max and blood lactate concentration tolerance.

2) The best way to do this is sparring.

It sounds obvious: just train like you fight. Fighting requires energy from both aerobic and anaerobic sources, and the only way to truly train the body is to continuously practice using these sources.

What do you think? Can we really say goodbye to roadwork for good?

Dynamic MMA Calgary - Update for 2016

2/1/2016

After 20 years of business, the time has come for us to further our development as one of the best MMA gyms in Calgary. We respect and work for each and every one of our members - we have decided to make some significant changes to reflect this. You may continue reading for detailed descriptions of these changes.

ADULT PROGRAM: We have officially split this program into 'beginner/intermediate' and 'advanced/fighter' classes. The division of these two levels will allow us to create more effective classes for each skill level. Our advanced students will not be held back, and our beginner/intermediate students will get the attention they need to develop, and to see their skills progress at a steadier pace.

MMA FITNESS: With our current schedule, we are taking five to ten minutes out of the end of each class to do some quick conditioning skills. Rather than wasting this skills time on a quick ten minute burst of fitness, we have decided to add two classes a week of pure fitness classes. These classes will involve bag work, functional movement, and lots of cardio and endurance training. A new addition to the Dynamic programming, these classes will have a DROP IN option!

WOMEN'S KICKBOXING: This program started up at the end of last year, and it has been a hit! We will continue to offer three classes a week. It is very similar to our MMA Fitness class, focusing on the fitness aspects of kickboxing. We will do bag work, skipping, shadowboxing, pad holding, and more. As with our MMA Fitness class, this one has a DROP IN option.

Other changes include a few time switches, including one for our Teen Kickboxing class. Please pick up a schedule and this detailed information next time you are at the gym.

Thank you all for your continued support. We appreciate each and every one of you, and we look forward to a successful new year!
